More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Illiteracy prevents a majority of rural Moroccans, especially women, from integrating into the modern marketplace. With increasing influence from foreigners and very little development support from their government a conflicted youth is emerging in the Zawiya Ahansal region of the Central High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Library access in this remote region will prepare the children for a successful life in the globalizing world increasing literacy, knowledge, and adaptability.
Activities
Restoring their cultural icon, the Igherm (kasbah), into a library will boost cultural pride while library access will educate many future generations; increasing literacy, global understanding, and tolerance of other cultures.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will provide access to books, newspapers, and magazines to four villages and over 5000 people, increasing literacy and tolerance. Knowledge leads to cross-cultural understanding and the ability to function in the modern world.
Project Message
Where is there a place (in the world) where demand will not be on the knowledge of reading, writing, and following the news? Demands of life were different. Now there is sentiment on studies.

Site Utility Installation
By Cloe Medina Erickson - Project DIrector, April 18, 2009 05:24 PM
Project director, Cloe Medina Erickson, will arrive in Morocco April 28 and spend the next two months working on the beginning of the renovation. Seven American university students and two Moroccan students will work side by side with the locals for six weeks on the initial stages of the renovation. This program was made possible through a partnership with Montana State University. The team will work under the supervision of a master earth builder restorationist and master carpenter. The students will learn ancient earth building techniques.
Photos of the restoration work will be posted in July.
