More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Students of poor coastal areas of Kerala, India, need to go to school in remote villages. Areas are steeped in poverty and at the mercy of repeated sea erosion . School is too far from villages to walk each day barefoot with heavy bags of books, making school attendance difficult to the point of jeopardizing students’ future. Bicycles will have a strong impact by helping poor boys and girls go to school regularly. Students will own their bike after completing school.

Activities

Buying and distributing 300 bicycles: 150 Herald Thriller bikes for boys; 150 Lady Bird bikes for girls. Students contribute Rs500 each (US$12). Project will ensure qualitative changes in people’s life and enhance village integrated development.

Latest Update from the Field

Let's get 100 more bikes in 2009!

By Dr. Claudine Dussert - President, Mary Mother of Peace M. Charity, March 30, 2009 11:32 AM

Second delivery of bikes at one of the schools in year 2008
Dear GlobalGiving Friend,
Thank to your generous support, the “Bicycles for Poor Students” project proposed for the coastal areas of Kerala near Azheekal has started successfully in 2007 and progressed well in 2008 (see previous updates). In 2009, we need at least 100 additional bikes to help more boys and girls go to school by providing each one of them with a bicycle. Budget: at least US$ 9,000 for 2009. Your gift will give help and hope to these poor children and their struggling families for a good cause: education. Thank you for your generosity in these difficult times.
