More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Due to severe drought conditions across the United States, an alarming increase in horse neglect is occurring due to a shortage of affordable hay for horse owners. This project is geographically designated for North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana as these are the states of operation for the horse programs. This will enable USERL to expand the number of horses allowed in the program needing shelter from malnutrition and starvation.

Activities

By expanding our horse program funding, USERL can take in a larger number of neglected horses needing immediate shelter and care for survival. The program covers all veterinary costs, hay and feed, as well as farrier expenses until adoption.

Funding Information

Total Funding Received to Date: $25,444
Remaining Goal to be Funded: $42,355

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

This project will allow more horses to be sheltered during this time of increased need due to drought/hay shortage, thereby helping to alleviate county officials concerns of where horses will go when faced with an increase in horse neglect cases.

Project Message

They (USERL) have been enormously successful and have raised the consciousness of the public about issues surrounding horses, for too long the forgotten victims of abuse and neglect.
- Joan M. Cunningham, North Carolina Assistant Attorney General

Latest Update from the Field

Project Update - August 2009

By Jennifer Malpass - Board Chair, August 24, 2009 02:29 PM

Pregnant mare on day of cruelty investigationSame Mare 6 months later, close to foaling.Result: Healthy mare and foal thanks to all who donated!
It continues to be a difficult year for the horses with the poor economy all across the U.S. However, with the help of all the wonderful donors through Global Giving, a total of $23,993 has been achieved which has assisted 11 horses thus far to escape neglect/abuse through the USERL Horse Program.
The following photos are just a small sample of how your donations help the horses. Pregnant and malnourished, this mare had little chance of survival. She and 6 other horses were seized during a cruelty investigation. After 6 months of nutritional and veterinary care, all are doing very well. And the mare pictured has given birth to a healthy filly!
