News from B&GC of GBR

By Fairleigh Cook Jackson - Development Director, March 09, 2009 03:02 PM

More than three years after hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated our State, children have still not been able to return home to our sister city of New Orleans. Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge remains a stable support for these children giving them The Positive Place for Kids. Our community is now in the process of recovering from hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which had quite an environmental and economic impact on our community. The health and well being of our community begins with our kids, thank you for considering your support of Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge

Updates from Baton Rouge

By Brooke Wood - Development Director, Boys and Girls Club, April 09, 2007 05:39 PM

Boys and Girls Club studentsBGC Bus Ribbon Cutting CeremonyNew site at St. Helena
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge has been very busy improving the lives of children in our community. This past summer, we operated nine summer enrichment sites serving more than 500 youth from 1st to 9th grade. Studies show that without enrichment during the summer months, students experience summer learning loss. Math, Science, and Reading were the main focus; however, we did incorporate arts and other life lessons into their learning experience. For example, dance, visual arts, drama classes, nutrition classes, fire/home safety, and abstinence classes, just to name a few.

On January 8, 2007 we created a new site in St. Helena Parish. The Club is providing an after school program at the elementary, middle and high school. We are happy to be serving the children of St. Helena.

The Boys & Girls Club recently celebrated the donation of a brand new bus at a ribbon cutting ceremony. The custom designed bus features photos of local Club Members and Baton Rouge landmarks. This bus will provide safe transportation to and from Club activities.

Another great achievement for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge, our Executive Director, Pat Van Burkleo, received the prestigious John W. Barton, Sr. Excellence in Nonprofit Management award. This award recognizes individuals for their excellence of service to the charitable, non-profit sector in the Baton Rouge area.

Three pictures are below and more will be added to the photo gallery!
