More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

While skilled medical care is available in Dominican Republic, children there are suffering and dying for lack of basic supplies. In the United States, hospitals have surplus medical materials that are going to waste. "Sending these still useful materials where they are desperately needed helps society's most vulnerable members have a good start in life," says Andrea Arkin, Program Director, Caribbean Region, "The community benefits for the long term."

Activities

Donations of medical materials to improve children's healthcare. "Donations [from Global Links] have allowed us to provide higher quality care to our patients." Dr. Christopher Doumpa, Director FUDOPROSA Hospital

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Focusing on pediatric health - providing the basic materials that enable local healthcare workers to set a standard for care - is investing in the future of the community.

Project Message

“Most people think that these materials are not so important. But to have just a lamp to do a physical exam is very important. This kind of thing will change reality in some of the communities here.”
- Dr. Socorro Gross, Asst. Director, Pan American Health Organization

Latest Update from the Field

Maternal and Infant care update

By Angela Garcia - Deputy Director, May 15, 2009 01:06 PM

With your help, Global Links was able to prepare a 40-foot sea container full of medical materials selected specifically to fulfill the needs expressed by staff at the Centro Materno Infantil San Lorenzo de Los Mina in early 2009. Approximately 55 women a day give birth in this 224-bed hospital.
The container was filled with such basic, essential items as a pediatric gurney, hospital-grade cribs, beds, chairs, infant scales, as well as equipment such as thermometers, nebulizers, and blood pressure units.

Global Links has had a strong commitment to improving healthcare in Dominican Republic since 1998 and we hope to continue improving care for women and children there in the future. Your support allows us to meet more requests for basic items such as IV poles so that children don't have to remain immobile with their IV bags taped to the wall during treatment for dehydration.

Thank you for your support. Please feel free to leave comments below regarding our project to improve maternal and infant care.
