More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Iraqis today face a triple threat of foreign occupation, sectarian violence, and heavy militia recruiting. The resulting political climate is stifling and divisive to young artists and activists, who lack a public forum for censorship-free expression. This project is filling that gap, as Sunni and Shia youth flock to events, defying the logic of civil war and coming together in a shared vision of a peaceful Iraq. Participation has boomed from a few dozen to over 700 audience members.

Activities

Artist, poets, musicians, actors, and students hold monthly public performances in and around Baghdad. Open human rights trainings and capacity-building seminars are also held biweekly to build youth leaders’ organizing, writing and computer skills.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Dialoging and networking with supposed adversaries will serve participants for years to come, as the lasting effects of sectarian violence are felt. Through trainings, participants develop skills to initiate change and build alternatives to war.

Project Message

The ability to hold vibrant festivals in the current oppressive and military times is an important success…it raises the voices of liberated people in the midst of religious hegemony and militarism.
- Yanar Mohammed, Director & Founder, OWFI

Latest Update from the Field

Young Iraqis Unite for Peace

By Vivian Stromberg - Executive Director, MADRE, May 06, 2009 04:47 PM

Speaking Out at the Summer Festival
In partnership with OWFI, MADRE has been supporting young Iraqis in their quest to unite and demand peace through poetry, music, and other art forms.

Art Action for Peace organized a Summer Festival in Al Zawra' Central Park. The festival brought together nearly 1,400 people over the course of the day from all areas of the city. The festival included musical performances and readings by young women and men advocating for peace and women’s rights. In addition to the Summer Festival, Art Action for Peace continues to hold regular gatherings of 20 to 30 young artists each week, enabling them to develop their art and strengthen their commitment to peace.

MADRE and OWFI staff also provided technical and moral support to Art Action for Peace youth organizers to create a new umbrella organization that will include all existing and developing Art Action groups: poetry, music, theater, writing, and sports. Finally, training was provided to outreach program officers who wanted to extend the reach of Art Action for Peace to cities in central, southern and western Iraq.
