More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Datalnay & Dlumay communities face food shortages for three to four months each year. Many members of the community make only $6 a month. When there is a surplus of food, village members carry heavy sacks of corn up to eight hours away to be sold at the nearest mill to earn supplemental income. The corn mill powered locally by hydro power willincrease community prosperity and health. To counter climate change and preserve the water resource, a nursery will be set up and 15,000 trees planted.

Activities

Technical design and civil construction are complete. The local non-profit SIBAT will facilitate turbine & generator installation, and start tree nursery and planting. The community will provide labor and be trained on operation and maintenance.

Latest Update from the Field

Equipment on its way

By Michel Maupoux - Program Manager, August 17, 2009 02:51 PM

As of August 4, 2009, the turbine and generator had cleared customs in Manila and were being sent on their final ship to General Santos in Mindanao. From there, they will need to be transported to the site, by truck then on foot for many hours depending on the status of the roads and paths after the recent tropical rains and typhoons.

The villagers are patiently but eagerly awaiting the equipment.

We hope to receive photos soon and be able to post them.
