More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Little Kids Rock operates in schools having no music education or in schools in which the music teacher wishes to rejuvenate the music curriculum. We serve public schools where 50% or more of the students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. We awaken the creativity that supports learning and self-discipline in academically, socially and economically at-risk students through music. Students gain a strong sense of accomplishment and self-worth as they develop their musical skills.
Activities
Public school teachers are supplied with musical instruments, equipped with curricula, and trained to use our methods to teach music in their schools. Students learn to play instruments at an accelerated pace, and compose and perform original songs.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
LKR puts music education back in public schools so all children have the opportunity to enrich their lives through music. Children who participate in music instruction develop skill-sets that prepare them for higher education and adulthood.
Project Message
“Helping students build self-esteem and creative expression have always presented great challenges to educators. LKR provides a major vehicle. The [behavioral] changes in my students are amazing.”
- Valerie Haskell, Teacher, Lawton Elementary School, San Francisco

At the 2009 Right to Rock benefit on Thursday, Oct. 22, Little Kids Rock presented legendary E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons with the inaugural “Big Man of the Year Award.” Mr. Clemons found time between touring with Bruce Springsteen and promoting his new book to help Little Kids Rock raise over $160,000 to restore and revitalize music education in public schools nationwide.

We are also expanding our program into new cities, with chapter launches in Montclair, NJ and San Diego, CA underway.
