More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Cyclone Nargis, the worst natural disaster in history to hit Myanmar, has left upward of 130,000 dead and 1 million people homeless. Survivors are living in sub-standard and cramped conditions, which unchecked will lead to further death and devastation. Compounding this problem, the number of people in need has increasingly overwhelmed the local health system. This project will enable hundreds of patients to be treated per day in RI supported static and mobile health clinics in South Dagon.

Activities

RI is working with local doctors in 4 health centers in the impacted area. To reach remote populations, RI has established mobile clinics to provide emergency treatment to those unable to access available resources due to damaged infrastructure.

Latest Update from the Field

August 2008: Myanmar Emergency Relief

By Flora Smith - Office Manager/ PR Assistant, August 13, 2008 04:30 PM

RI is providing urgent medical care to thousands of survivors in the wake of the devastating Myanmar cyclone disaster. With an office in Yangon RI has assembled a team of local doctors and health professionals, and working together they are providing life-saving services to the most vulnerable and help contain the rapid spread of infectious disease.

Currently several medical teams are working in four RI-supported health clinics in South Dagon. To reach remote populations, RI has also established mobile clinics to provide emergency treatment to those unable to access available resources. Recently, RI has expanded its operations to damaged areas including the Kunchan Gone township and outlying areas.
