More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Over 85% of Bangladesh’s 135 million citizens live in rural areas and their livelihoods depend mainly on subsistence farming. The goal of this project is to increase the incomes of 300 farmers by at least $250 a year. This will be achieved through helping farmers participate in commercial markets for high-value crops such as turmeric, ginger and chilies, and helping them to gain access to quality agricultural supplies, such as, seeds, affordable irrigation, fertilizer, and farm training.

Activities

Most farmers are familiar with production of a multitude of spices. IDE is facilitating training on harvest and post-harvest techniques. These skills will significantly improve small farmers’ ability to earn the best prices for their spice crops.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

This intervention will impact 300 small farmers by enabling them to increase their production and to receive higher prices for their product. The farmers will increase their income as they increase their role in primary processing of the product.

Project Message

Four years ago, I thought poverty was my destiny. Thanks to the skills I learned from IDE, I made enough to reimburse the loan, and purchase a piece of land in 3 years.

IDE Bangladesh Celebrates 25 Years

By Jeslin Shahrezaei - Donor Coordinator, May 15, 2009 01:51 PM

IDE Bangladesh is celebrating 25 years of successfully helping small rural farmers generate additional income this year! Our work in Bangladesh began with the rower water pump, developed by George Klaseen, who was IDE Bangladesh's first Country Director. Talks with the farmers revealed that this pump, while efficient, was very strenuous to handle for the farmers. Enter the treadle pump. IDE began a widespread marketing campaign, involving Bollywood style movies, movie vans, radio and print ads, demonstration plots and most importantly word of mouth. All of these efforts culminated in the sale of 1.5 million treadle pumps to Bangladeshi farmers.

The sale of treadle pumps is now a sustainable value chain within Bangladesh and needs little help from IDE. Our work is more focused on market connections, skill training in animal husbandry, marketing and general business practices as well as providing linkages with farmers to better inputs such as seed, fertilizer and other irrigation systems.

Your support of IDE Bangladesh helps us to continue to provide farmers with the training and inputs necessary to take the first permanent steps out of poverty.
