More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Students walk up to 7km to fetch their water for the day. And these very water sources are unclean and unsafe. The time wasted traveling to gather water can be better spent in class. Easy access to clean water reduces water-borne disease and keeps kids in class. The lack of clean water disproportionately effects girls, as they are often the ones tasked with gathering water. Lack of water for proper hygiene also keeps girls away. Clean water profoundly changes the lives of children.

Activities

Our local partner mobilizes the community around the school and establishes a water committee to oversee the project. The communities makes tangible investments into the water project further ensuring long-term sustainability. Then they dig.

Shanderema School Well

By Peter Chasse - First Well Complete, November 18, 2009 04:18 PM

This first well has been completed at the Shanderema Secondary School in Western Kenya. This well serves over 400 students and a total of 747 including the surrounding community.

The well is located at:

00.36046 N
34.91648 E

about 22km from Kakamega, Kenya.

A water committee of 3 men & 4 women are overseeing the project. They, together with the community, raised the initial funds needed to secure geological reports and permits. This investment demonstrates a partnership and helps ensure their long-term commitment to the project.

Prior to the completion of the well, students from the school gathered water from an unprotected stream about 2.5km from the school. A community member noted, "that their current water source like many others caused water borne diseases like diarrhea, dysentery and coughs. It's [was] also too expensive to treat it to make it clean."
