Mission
First Peoples, Indigenous-led, works to stop or mitigate exploitation of Indigenous territories and assets. We address Indigenous economics and development in culturally-appropriate ways, bridging traditional values and modern economics. Four principles drive our asset-based approach to sustainable development: Indigenous Peoples own many assets (land, resources, knowledge); assets are building blocks of wealth; assets provide income and tangible benefits; asset control separates rich and poor.
Programs
First Peoples' main program is our Keepers of the Earth Program and Fund. The Program houses research on Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous issues while the Fund makes grants directly to Indigenous communities. To date we have made 26 grants totaling almost $250,000. Corporate Engagement, our second program, works with corporations, helping them work toward their goals by partnering with Indigenous Peoples to achieve mutually beneficial development agreements without unjust exploitation.
Personnel Overview
Peter Poole, Ph.D. - Field Consultant
Peter Poole has over 25 year experience in use of geo-spatial technologies to map land rights, and natural and cultural resources. He has extensive experience training and assisting Indigenous peoples to create and use maps to document their lands and other assets. Dr. Poole has worked on scores of mapping projects from the Arctic to the tropics in the Americas, Asia and Africa.
Kuela Kiema - Community Coordinator
Kuela Kiema is a San from Botswana. He was the assistant coordinator for the Kuru Cultural Center starting in 2000. In 2006 he became the Coordinator and Program Officer for Kuru. Mr. Kiema currently works consulting with San People, NGOs and Botswana's government to negotiate a better situation for communities in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
Pius Tebele - Community Coordinator
Pius Tebele serves as a tour operator with AfrikaCalls. Prior to a 2008 trip with Rebecca Adamson to visit the San communities in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Mr. Tebele was unaware of the plight of the San. As a result of that visit, he is dedicating his time and resources to delivering the food, water, and necessary supplies to ensure the survival of the San communities.
