First Round a Success!

By Jessica Friswell - Research and Internship Coordinator, March 11, 2009 11:31 AM

First Peoples Worldwide has completed a successful delivery circuit in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve to bring food, water, and supplies to the four resettled San communities. First Peoples has ensured that Indigenous San are engaged in the delivery process because they are best received by members of the resettled San communities. While outsiders are welcome, San people working with San communities have a greater impact as it helps build bridges between communities, fortifies peer-to-peer relationships, and provides opportunity and training for community members. Working with local partners in Botswana enables First Peoples to maintain low overhead costs. Beyond the scheduled provisions deliveries, First Peoples is drafting plans to further engage San community members in discussions regarding the establishment of a co-management arrangement between communities and the local park authorities. This arrangement will bridge traditional and scientific knowledge and skills for conservation while enabling the San to continue their livelihoods on their traditional lands. In the coming months, First Peoples will be sending a staff member to work alongside the San to help them achieve co-management and will create a photography diary for this project.
