More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Providing power to these communities’ schools allows each of the roughly 400 households to gain access to improved education and modern, clean lighting that can provide immediate and long-term impacts. Tiwai Island is Sierra Leone’s only Community Based Eco-Tourism project and is a globally important biodiversity location due to its high concentration of primates. Without development opportunities in the 8 adjacent communities the long term viability of the wildlife reserve is threatened.
Activities
Each of the 8 community schools will be provided with solar electricity. Rechargeable lanterns will be introduced that can be brought to the school for charging. Community members will be trained to operate and maintain the system in the long term.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Improving the education level of community members is vital to the development of the villages. Providing light allows for increased hours for study, the potential for rotation system to allow for evening classes and a facility for vocational classes
Project Message
Since the system was installed children are studying longer hours than before. For me it has reduced the cost of kerosene and other people in the village admire the lighting in my home.

Latest Update from the Field
Kambama Village
By Simon Willans - Programme Co-Ordinator, July 06, 2009 12:26 PM
Vaama was the first of the schools and went fairly smoothly...until the bees came. I had heard African bees can be a bit nasty and they certainly lived up to their word. All of the crew were stung numerous times and work was cancelled for the day. After a bit of recovery and the bees banishment we came the next day and finished the work. Good news...the village has lights in the school...bad news, their honey supply is dramatically lower.
For the next two days we worked in Kambama, the last village on the way to Tiwai and the location of the boat launching point. Although the plan was to just do the school we ended up with a much more ambitious and difficult project that included lights at the barri and water pump, a streetlight in the car turning area and a 400 yard trench to the school and the full lighting of that. It was a tough two days for the team and the 50 or so community members who contributed by either digging, building fixtures, cooking or just providing general support. In the end the community can not only enjoy the benefit of school lighting but can also boast of being the frist 'grid tied' community in Pujehun!
