More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

My name is Griffin Vanze. I am currently a volunteer teacher at a primary school in a small village in the Caprivi Strip. I have been here for about one year and will be here for another year and a half. My village needs two classrooms and a library, but the school cannot afford it. I am raising money for the construction costs and I need your help in the funding of the project.

Activities

The rooms in which grades 5 and 6 currently learn are mud huts with tin roofs. The tin roof recently blew off in a windstorm. The government has agreed to build a new classroom block, if I can raise half the money.

Funding Information

Total Funding Received to Date: $30,925
Remaining Goal to be Funded: $4,075
Total Funding Goal: $35,000

Additional Documentation

This project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc).

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The Caprivi Strip has an HIV /Aids rate of at least 39%. Alchoholism is a serious problem. 85% of the children in my school are orphaned. I see education as a way of helping these children rise above the astoundingly difficult conditions.

Project Message

Alone, I will not be able to complete this building, but together we can erect a monument of hope for the future of Namibia’s children. Thank you very much for your time and concern for my cause.
- Griffin Vanze, Volunteer teacher

Update on school

By Griffin Vanze - Teacher, July 24, 2009 02:04 PM

Update:
Hello from the Caprivi Strip! After months of waiting for approval, we finally have the go-ahead from the central government in Windhoek!
This week we will be contacting the contractors to begin construction as soon as possible. By mid-August, the foundation of the building should be complete. After each period of 30 days, the Education Planner from the regional office in Katima will review progress and pay accordingly – the more work that is completed, the higher the percentage of the total cost that is paid.

It’s about time as well! In this current term, students in Grades 5-7 have been completing collage projects on various topics including “body language” and “essentials versus luxuries.” Once the building is complete, the walls will be ideal places to put up their hard work, reassured that the elements will not tear them down.

However, we want to hear what you as donors think about the progress of the building. Frustrated that it has taken so long? Excited that it is finally starting? Thoughts or perspectives to share about development work? Please give feedback! I always appreciate words of encouragement, as well as constructive criticism that may help me improve my method of motivating progress with the project.

Thanks so much to all who have given and supported this project. The snowball that is our vision is picking up momentum and is starting to be realized. Though it may not seem like it, 90% of the work to complete the whole process has been done. Stay tuned for more updates!

From Mubiza,
Griffin Vanze
