More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In most high schools, students don't truly begin planning for college until the 11th or 12th grade. Delaying the conversation until the junior year hurts our students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, because they miss out on the information they need to get ahead early and maximize their chances for success.

Activities

Funding will go directly to the publication and distribution of Aiming Higher, our 9th grade parent guide (app. $1/guide). We use the guide with 9th grade students, teachers, and families, so they can work together to make sure students get on track.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Students whose families benefit from this information are more likely to get on track and stay on track for college.

Project Message

Parent involvement is essential to student academic success. The New Visions’ 9th grade parents guide helps parents get their 9th grader onto a strong start on the road to a successful future by educating them about the four pillars of success in the 9th grade – attendance, grades, credit accumulation, and passing at least one NY State Regents’ exam with a score of 75 or higher – and, most importantly, how they can help their student reach these important benchmarks for college-career preparation, entrance and success.

Latest Update from the Field

Thank you!

By Kendra Shumway - Development Officer, October 22, 2009 01:45 PM

First of all, a huge thank you to those who supported this work this summer. The school year is off to a great start, and I wanted to send along an update from our Parent Engagement team:

Is Your 9th Grader on Track for College? So far this year more than 5,000 parents of public schools students throughout New York City know the answer to that question. Since August 2009, New Visions has made the publication available to parents of 9th graders in fifteen public schools throughout the five boroughs of NYC. New Visions is supplementing the publication with workshops for parents and students to make sure they know what they need to do to do to finish 9th grade successfully and be on track for college.

We know our work -- and your support -- is making a difference, because of what our parents are telling us:

“(now that I ) know what my child needs to graduate (ready for college) I will make sure he is receiving the proper classes and credits.”

“ My child and I can work on this together (4 pillars of 9th grade success)”

“I didn’t know the impact that a good 9th grade year has on the 10th grade”

“my next steps are to maintain a connection with the school staff and follow up on my child’s academic progress"

Again, THANK YOU! We will continue to publish these resources since they are some of the most highly demanded from our principals, parents, and teachers. And we will continue to keep you up to date on the work we are doing to make sure our parents have the tools they need to support their kids.
