More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Farms in the Atlantic Rainforest opened with the old practice of slash-and-burn, an inadequate non-sustainable production system. This led to severe degradation of soil, water and the landscape, causing growing rural poverty and smallholders to migrate to cities. The project will promote awareness and knowledge of environmental conservation and sustainable development forest farming for rural economic rehabilitation, keeping environment-minded farmers and their families on their land.

Activities

Better land use and introduction of new models for ecological and economical sustainable production. Train farmers in agro-forestry technology, showing that better and more lasting returns can be obtained from these production systems.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Our work is directly relevant to more than 2 million people in our neighboring counties and indirectly to many more inhabitants of the Paraiba do Sul River Valley. I believe our example will also have growing national relevance.

Project Message

"I am sure that what I am proposing today as an innovative idea and experience, will be of compulsory usage in many countries in the near future."

PROJECT FUNDED

The project "Protect Rainforest With Sustainable Practices" is totally funded and this is a great result and for me a great achievement. I was amazed how fast the resources were donated and reached the $20.000 demanded. In March 2005 there were only $233 donated, ( 1 %). This means that the ideas proposed were accepted by many people concerned with the future of our planet and people also that saw that there are agroforestry solutions that, associating protecting and restoring the land and the forests, producing many different agroforest products and goods, making money, having a better way of living and protecting the nature doing this, is a good and feasible possibility to be adopted by farmers.
I want to thank all the donors that contributed to this project and their important help, that planted so many trees, trained and taught many students and made possible to spread the Agroforestry possibility to many people.
I am preparing for GlobalGiving a new project that will be a follow up of project 636 because the work must go on.
The new project has to make possible to continue with our present agroforestry planting and local training and teaching activities, but it will bring a new component that will be of taking freely, with your donations, the learning's, knowledge and activities of SALVEASERRA and CETAR, our center for agroforestry technology, out side, to our neighbors and local rural communities, accomplishing the objectives of the project that are to promote better land use and the introduction of new models for ecological and economical sustainable production. We will do this directly, training farmers in agroforestry technology in their home places, promoting reunions with lectures on subjects of interest, projection of videos, practice field work, and donation of tree nurseries to communities and schools.
With the new project will spread further away the awareness of environmental conservation and sustainable development forest farming for rural economic and environmental rehabilitation, keeping this new environment-minded farmer and their families on their land and rural villages, in permanent ecological balance with nature.
Thank you very much. Roberto Lamego
