More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The 1.8 million two-stroke vehicles in the Philippines produce the pollution equivalent of 5 billion automobiles. 1.3 million taxi drivers & millions of working class Filipinos rely on them for income/transportation respectively. Our retrofit dramatically reduces emissions: carbon monoxide 76%, carbon dioxide 35%, & hydrocarbon 89%. In addition, fuel consumption is reduced by 35%, oil consumption by 50%. This increased fuel efficiency saves taxi drivers $500 per year, a 33% increase in income.

Activities

Envirofit currently has pilot projects in 3 historic/tourist cities: Vigan, Puerto Princesa, and Boracay. These projects aim to retrofit nearly 4000 vehicles. We are looking to replicate this project throughout the Philippines and to other countries.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Our 3 pilot projects will ANNUALLY remove 127,000 automobile equivalents of pollution and infuse $1.1 million dollars into the local economy. We expect incidence of respiratory disease to decline with an improvement in the drivers’ quality of life.

Project Message

After 6 months of using Envirofit’s kit I was able to save up enough money to use as matching funds for a housing grant. I rebuilt my home & my neighbor’s home, which provided housing for 6 families!

Latest Update from the Field

Environmental Regulatory Support

By Jaime Whitlock - PR & Communications Manager, December 16, 2008 05:52 PM

We have recently worked with the US Environmental Protection Agency on a joint demonstration project to develop a direct-injection Bajaj auto-rickshaw in Pune, India. Endorsement from groups with international reputations like the US EPA provides great momentum and enhances our global standing as a company that delivers. Non-governmental entities such as the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-ASIA) and the Manila Observatory are also extremely supportive of our efforts, and add legitimacy from the scientific and advisory board perspective. CAI-ASIA endorsed our technology formally in 2006, and is playing a key role in widespread awareness-raising activities for both the Philippines and beyond. Envirofit has also been publicly endorsed by the Philippine Office of the President -- Public Transport Affairs (PTAO). Working with CAI Asia, we are garnering local and national (Philippine) support from agencies such as the DOTC, DENR and EMB to permit a phased implementation of stricter emissions standards in the cities most impacted by two-stroke engine pollution.
