SOPRANOS ACTOR HELPS MASAI WOMEN
Sopranos actor and filmmaker, Turk Pipkin, recently visited our site. In this photo he shows our female nursery workers how the camera works. Look for Turk's short film about how improving the lot of Masai women helps the entire community.

MASAI GIRLS MARRY YOUNG
Since we have been involved with the Masai in Magadi there has been a dramatic improvement in the lot of women and girls. For the first time ever, women have been involved with leadership, however, girls still get married at young ages and are forced to grow up much faster than their Western counterparts.

20 YEAR OLD MASAI WOMAN IN NURSERY
For the first time int he history of the Shompole Group Ranch Masai, women have been allowed to work side by side with the men. Currently, we have 4 Masai women working in the nursery. They have proved to be better workers than the men, and most importantly, when they receive their salaries, the money goes to taking care of their families, thus improving the lives of many other Masai children.

TREES REACH 15 FEET IN ONE YEAR
Our Nitrogen Fixing trees grow extremely fast. These trees were planted less than a year ago and they are reaching 20 feet. Turk Pipkin, actor on Sopranos, with the Masai workers is 6' 7" tall. Our trees are now 2 1/2 Turks tall. We have devised a new measuring stick for tree growth. If it is 1 Turk it is good, if it is 2 Turks, it is great, if it reaches 3 Turks, now we are in business.

MASAI GIRLS DANCE FOR CONSERVATION
The participating schools always put on a show for visitors. They sing and dance and recite traditional poems about conserving the environment.
|
2500 CHILDREN PLANTING TREES
The Masai children of Magadi seem to enjoy planting trees. Over 2500 students are participating in our tree planting program and conservation training. Right now we have planted out over 30,000 trees and can germinate 100,000 seedlings per month in our nursery.

CHILDREN SUFFER FROM DESERTIFICATION
Due to the massive deforestation, which has caused climate change, the children, especially the girls, suffer the most. Girls have to walk miles each day just to fetch water and consequently, only 40% of the girls in the area attend schoo.
|
WILDLIFE RETURNING TO MAGADI
It is a good sign that animals are returning to Magadi. However, we are still seeking ways to avoid the human and wildlife conflicts that naturally occur when animals return. Fortunately, our Masai partners have their own Wildlife Conservancy and have great respect for the animals. They alse keep illegal poachers away.

MASAI BOYS SING FOR RAIN
With a 3 year drought effecting the livelihoods of the Masai in Magadi, this boy is doing a rain dance, not too much different from American Indians. He is also getting ready for circumcision which will bring him into manhood.
|
CLEAN WATER IS AN OBSTACLE
Getting water to desertified lands can be very tricky. Masai women spend the bulk of their week fetching water for their homes. Even baths and washing clothes can become a burden. Girls get married as young as 13 and this is the life the are subject to. Oftentimes, they are the 3rd or 4th wife. It is not a life for women.
