Maha, a success story

Maha, a success story
Tsunami survivor Maha, now 15 years old, is shown here (in red) with her family. She is doing well at school. Her father is a very poor rickshaw driver and her mother is cleaning houses. Maha wants to become a physician to better combat the consequences of natural disasters on the health of people. Thanks to Global Giving and God-parents her dream can become a reality.

Meredith Landis from GlobalGiving visits tsunami-a
Joyful high school girls welcome Meredith with flowers and smiles when Ms. Backiam, Director of the shelter introduced her to these former tsunami victims. "It is very inspiring to see these girls so happy to go to school", said Meredith after the visit on February 5, 2007. She was accompanied by Mathew Sebastian, our local project supervisor.

Project is helping the girls go back to school and complete a high school degree in Santhome. In 2009, 25 girls are attending school regularly

Tables and benches were bought with Global Giving funds (US$900). The girls do not sit anymore on a cement floor to study and school results improved dramatically in 2007 and 2008. 20 girls have already graduated, and in 2009, 25 poor girls --only a few are now tsunami victims--are attending school, making the project sustainable over time.

Joyful Village Children

Joyful Village Children
Children were smiling again to life when we visited their village --Pettankunam near Cuddalore-- with two local volunteers in January 2006 to assess post-tsunami needs. A new devastating flood had hit the village in November 2005, destroying many poorly built houses. Reconstruction is under way led by a major Indian Christian relief agency. In 2006/2007, project provided a few sewing machines for young women, medical assistance and school supplies as needed. The school has been reopened.
