More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Only 29% of Cambodians currently have access to improved water sources. Lack of access to safe drinking water is one of the main causes of disease in Cambodia. The Ceramic Water Purifier (CWP) Project is a 5-year plan to make clean water available to 75,000 households and to create a sustainable, self-financing industry to continue long-term CWP distribution. The CWP effectively removes bacteriological contamination, through a filtering system, making water safe for human consumption.
Activities
Develop production plants; train distributors and retailers; promote CWP to raise awareness and create demand; control quality to assure that CWPs distributed meet quality standards; and transfer ongoing activities to the private sector.

Latest Update from the Field
Progress with CWP Project
By Zenia Tata - Executive Director-IDE USA, August 13, 2007 05:16 PM
Field studies by UNICEF and IDE have shown that the CWP, which costs less than $10, reduces the incidence of diarrhea by 46%, lightens women's workloads by 22 hours per month, and leads to expense savings of $1 to $2 per month.
Since Jan 2006, more than 40,000 households have been reached. IDE continues to facilitate distribution systems; prepare marketing plans; improve production processes; reduce costs; and strengthen distribution networks.
