More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Political and economic chaos, as well as a severe drought, has impoverished the majority of Zimbabweans. Due to failing crops, a great number of peasant farmers are no longer able to afford to send their girl children to school. School fees and uniforms cost $48 per child annually in Zimbabwe and for many this sum is impossible to pay. Sadly, girls are being forced to drop out of school. It is most likely that the majority of the girls will never return.

Activities

Girl Child Network (GCN) will use the funds to pay for one year's school fees and a uniform, including a new pair of shoes, for 150 of the most disadvantaged girls from Chihota, Hwange, and Rusape.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

GCN has offices in each community and are aware those girls who are most in need. To date, GCN has provided approximately 2,000 scholarships for girl children in Zimbabwe.

Project Message

In September 2002 I attended a scholarship award ceremony in Hwange. As long as live I’ll never forget the happiness and gratitude that the girls expressed as they accepted their scholarships.

Latest Update from the Field

GCN Wins UNDP Red Ribbon Award!

By IDEX - Project sponsor, September 15, 2006 06:17 PM

IDEX congratulates our partner, Girl Child Network (GCN), on the announcement that the organization is a winner of the Red Ribbon Award: Celebrating Community Leadership and Action on AIDS. Based in Zimbabwe, GCN is the first winner of the Red Ribbon award for Addressing Gender Inequities that Fuel the HIV/AIDS Epidemic. The award was given to them at the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto last month.

Sarah Dotlich, IDEX's Africa Program Director announced, "We have been watching their truly exceptional work grow since GCN's inception in 1998. It's fitting to see GCN receive international recognition that can only help them to further their objectives while providing a model of similar initiatives in the region."

To learn more about the compelling work of GCN come and hear one of the founding members speak. Memory Bandera will be in the Bay Area at the end of September and IDEX is hosting an event for her at the Women's Building, see below.
