More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Latrine use by children is low because they fear the large drop hole and unreliable construction. Young children defecate openly leading to water contamination and diseases. To increase interest in sanitation the program will conduct an improved sanitation and beautification competition between the schools. Each student receives a voucher to take home.
Activities
Children receive a kid-size latrine “arbor-loo” so they can defecate safely and hygienically. Ash and dirt are added to feces after each use to eliminate odor, promote composting and encourage hand-washing. When full a tree is planted in the pit.

We used to spend a lot of time looking after sick relatives but now we will have more time to do development activities to benefit our area.

Update: School Sanitation Program in Chikwawa
By Monica LaBiche Brown - Assistant Director, Foundation Relations, July 15, 2009 02:09 PM
The key behavior changes targeted in the classes are hand washing, safe handling of water from source to point of use, and safe disposal of human waste. School sanitation committees made up of a teacher and 8-10 students have been formed. They have received training on proper maintenance of the system and enforce hygiene messages learned in class.
