More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The majority of rural Zimbabweans live in poverty due to political and economic challenges and severe drought. Failing crops and record inflation translate to a great number of families unable to send their girl children to school. School fees and uniforms are impossible to pay as prices keep rising. Sadly, families must choose which of their children to send to school and sons are usually first choice. It is likely many girls will never return to school after dropping out.

Activities

IDEX partners with the Girl Child Network (GCN) who uses the funds to pay for school fees, a uniform and hot meals as well as counseling, AIDS prevention and leadership training for the most disadvantaged girls in the area outside of Victoria Falls.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

GCN’s work shows that educating and counseling impoverished girls over the long term reduces HIV-prevalence and provides opportunities for economic independence. Supporting girls’ education and empowerment is an effective tool to eradicating poverty.

Project Message

I would like to thank GCN for paying for my school fees. Without help, I don’t know what I would have done. Without your love and interest, I would have suffered because of the situation I was in.

Latest Update from the Field

November 2009 Update

By Gillian Wilson - Communications Director, November 16, 2009 01:18 PM

In the Hwange region of Zimbabwe, Girl Child Network has remained one of the few resources for girls. During this turbulent time in Zimbabwe, acute poverty, unemployment and HIV and AIDS have further exacerbated the situation for girls. Undeniably, here has been great need for support from GCN to help girls get out of abusive situations as well helping them receive education and other critical support.

From their latest update, Girl Child Network ensured that girls in difficult circumstances continued with their education. With your support for the provision of school fees, uniforms and stationery, girls are able to attend school. In spite of all the challenges GCN managed to carry out the following activities:
•   Emergency rescue missions and follow up for neglected girls or those in abusive situations.
•   Reinstatement of girls into school and school fees payment, primarily for secondary school-aged girls.
•   Empowerment activities at the centre
Girls selected for scholarships are typically between the ages 10 and 18. Many are heads of households and care for siblings. Others are orphaned, suffer abuse, and/or deal with malnutrition and HIV/AIDs and other diseases. Your critical support is appreciated and needed now more than ever.
