More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
In the last few decades Waslala, an extremely isolated region just north of Nicaragua, has experienced intense armed conflict, and as a result has high regional and domestic violence and sexual abuse rates. Abuse victims, generally women and girls, need physical, emotional, and legal support. The residential shelter houses 15-25 women and children and allows them to leave traumatic pasts and begin to recover, both emotionally and physically. Once women are ready, they reenter their community.
Activities
Women are provided with a safe residence and participate in programs that provide emotional recuperation and legal support to assist with issues such as protection of children, divorce, and legalization of properties.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Open a new shelter that houses up to 25 women and their children. The project provides emotional support and legal assistance to women who will ultimately reintegrate into their community.
Project Message
In Nicaragua every day, two young women between 14 and 25 years-old are raped and 12 are beaten or battered. The shelter is a safe haven for Waslala’s battered women to learn to protect their rights.
