More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Burmese government has been oppressing the indigenous Karen population for decades. Due to the Burmese government’s oppression, medical assistance for the Karen people is not supported by any governmental agency, and non-governmental organizations are not permitted to operate in this zone. The Karen peoples living in Thailand have established 35 clinics for the Karen living inside Burma, but most lack electricity. Green Empowerment will provide solar-powered electricity to 7 clinics.

Activities

We will provide small photovoltaic (PV) systems to 7 clinics. We will provide training for the surgeons, medics, and repairmen to keep the systems operating, and to install and relocate the systems as required.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Electrification makes possible lighting required for medical procedures and power for medical devices. Better treatment will result for casualties of the conflict along the Thai-Burma border and for patients affected by malaria and other illnesses.

Project Message

Our dream 10 years ago was to have some kind of lighting for these clinics. And when we did the first clinics last summer, I could only hope that we would be able to do some more.
- Eh Kalu, Director, Internally Displaced Karen People (IDKP)
