More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
75,000 Amerindians reside in isolated villages in Guyana’s hinterland. Communication systems are poor and electricity is scarce or non-existent. As a result school children and adults lag behind in education & socio-economic development. Nestled in a mountain valley, Wayling is located a 16-hour walk from the nearest town. It recently constructed a one-room building for school and community meeting rooms. Solar power will provide lights, entertainment & emergency communication for 100 persons.
Activities
Coordinate with government officials; verify needs with community leaders; purchase solar/radio systems, DVD/TV players and DVDs; transport materials by plane, boat and porters, & train community maintenance team to install & operate systems.

Latest Update from the Field
Final report from Wayalayeng project
By Jerry La Gra - Project Leader, March 07, 2008 05:45 PM
The best news is that in November 2007 a friend of mine overnighted in Wayalayeng and reported to me that the lights were working in the school and the church and the radio was operating ok. He did not actually see the TV working but Councillor Harris reported that "all equipment was functioning."
Once again I would like to thank Global Giving for all the support given to this isolated village.
Regards,
Jerry
