Project Needs and Beneficiaries
In the 1994 genocide, over 800,000 people were killed, 2,000,000 more left the country. Over ⅓ of households are headed by women; 80% of these are run by impoverished widows with no electricity or running water. Women are raising children that are the result of brutal crimes. Many have sexually transmitted diseases – over ¼ million children have been orphaned by AIDS alone. With no proper health care, food or an income to help take care of these children and families, they are left with nothing.
Activities
Through the sponsorship program, these women go through a year long education program, receive income generation assistance, rights awareness education and market based vocational skills to give them the courage to become voices for their community.
