More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Every 30 minutes, another young person in the US gets infected with HIV. For homeless youth, the rate of infection is 13 times higher. And in Los Angeles, thousands of runaway and homeless youth are living out on the streets. The safety net is gone; state HIV funding has collapsed. You can empower a team of trained workers and volunteers to reach these kids on their own turf. Our goal: to impact at least 365 high-risk youth with a life-changing intervention that can stop HIV.

Activities

We have proven outreach and intervention tools that change the way kids see their own risky behavior. Our team will work to engage homeless kids where they hang out or where they live… sleeping on the street, under an overpass, in alleys or parks.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Treatment has improved, but HIV still kills. Modern drugs can add 24 years for someone with the disease. That costs $618,900. But you can reach a high-risk youth with a meaningful intervention to prevent this lifetime of illness for just $137.

Project Message

"I know what it’s like to be alone on the street… kids are so vulnerable. Many of them ran away to escape abuse or other problems. The cost of not helping is simply too high. HIV is 100% preventable."
