Riders for Health Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, GlobalGiving donors have been supporting the training of Environmental Health Technicians (EHTs) in riding and the basic maintenance of motorcycles. Riders would like to thank all the donors on GlobalGiving for allowing us to complete this training and give EHTs the transport they need to reach their communities, day in, day out.

Meet the team - Alfred Gonga

Riders for Health’s teams in Africa are made up entirely of nationals of the countries in which we work. In Zimbabwe, GlobalGiving donors are helping to support the training of community nurses in vital motorcycle-riding and maintenance skills. Here, we find out more about the man responsible for getting the health workers onto two wheels – Alfred Gonga, principal of the Riders’ Academy of Vehicle Management.

Riders for Health Zimbabwe update report – 2006

In 2006, the Riders Zimbabwe programme reached a milestone of ten years in operation. The impact of Riders’ services on the mobility of the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare has been incredible. Approximately 90% more health workers are now using vehicles to reach their communities, while the annual motorcycle fleet maintenance cost per thousand people reached by those health workers has dropped by 62%.

News Release

March 14, 2006—The Skoll Foundation today announced it is awarding $13 million to recipients of the 2006 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship and $3 million to Ashoka for a partnership to help build the field of social entrepreneurship.
