More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

There are one billion homeless in our world today. We use football as a trigger to inspire and energise people who are homeless to change their own lives. By this approach the Homeless World Cup creates better opportunities for people who are currently homeless and excluded and reduces homelessness on a global level. 77% of players change their lives regaining self esteem and coming off drugs and alcohol, getting into homes, jobs, training, education and repairing relationships.

Activities

An international football tournament has triggered and supports over 50 national football projects working with homeless people around the world. This improves health, self esteem and provides education and support to change lives.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

By 2012 we aim to support and fund local grassroots football projects in over 75 nations that will involve between 100,000 and one million homeless people to change their lives. Sport has tremendous power to change lives, to change the world.

Project Message

Homeless people have low self confidence, are isolated, feeling lonely. In a team at the Homeless World Cup they stand proud, they change. Football can be used to tackle the world's biggest problems.

Ukraine win Homeless World Cup 2009

By Lynn Jarvis - Ukraine defeat Portugal 5-4 , September 16, 2009 12:48 PM

Ukraine defeated Portugal 5-4 in the final of the Milan 2009 Homeless World Cup, the annual international football tournament that gives people who are homeless the opportunity to change their own lives. 48 nations, 500 players from all 5 continents of the world were united in the Arena Civica, Milan, Italy for the 7th Homeless World Cup.

Mel Young, President, Homeless World Cup, closing the competition said: "Congratulations to the players. Your spirit of fair play, courage and determination is a true example to the human race. This is what the united nations can look like. People standing together creating change. A ball can change the world."

Milan officials handed over to Brazil for the Rio 2010 Homeless World Cup in a high energy display of samba and colour with the Brazilians promising to deliver the best tournament ever next year.

77% of players involved in the Homeless World Cup experience a significant life change; no-longer using drugs and alcohol, moving into homes, jobs, education, training, repairing relationships and becoming coaches or players with semi-pro teams. 94% claim to have a renewed motivation for life.
