Project Needs and Beneficiaries

After years of war and conflict, Afghanistan remains a country in transition. One of the most critical factors impacting the nation’s economic recovery is limited access to financial services and capital for its people—particularly in the rural areas. For thousands of low-income rural men and women, the needs range from funding to build homes for the large numbers of refugees and displaced people, to opportunities to engage in income-generating activities for more settled groups.

Activities

Since its launch in 2004, the program has issued loans to 3,200 clients, lending out more than $1.5 million. For the borrowers, this small loan can help increase income by 70%, making a significant difference in quality of life for the whole family.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Consider: $1,000 can provide 3 people loans to develop their small businesses. Given the program’s repayment rate, that entire amount can be re-loaned to an additional 6 people in 3 years, generate more than $36,000 in extra income for poor families.

Project Message

The great challenge before us is to address the constraints that exclude people from full participation in the financial sector.
- Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary General

CHF/Afghanistan Introduces New Loan Product

By Nussi Abdullah - Program Development Officer, February 12, 2009 09:53 PM

With more than 11,600 loans issued since its inception in March 2004, CHF’s Afghanistan Microfinance Institution has issued more than $6 million in small loans to give rural Afghans the funds they need to expand their livelihoods. In the Fall of 2007, CHF launched a new loan product allowing clients to take out loans specifically to enhance their agricultural and livestock activities. Rural clients use this loans--which average at around $250--allow clients to purchase sheep, cows, or chicken, livestock that helps them enhance their household asset base, produce food for better nutrition, and earn additional income.

Throughout, AMFI clients have successfully maintained a near 100% on-time repayment rate, a remarkable testament to the positive impact a small investment of capital can have on the long-term economic security of low-income entrepreneurs.

Support for this project from GLobal Giving will allow CHF to expand its services to reach even more clients.
