Homeless football in Russia - summer 2009

By Arkady TYURIN - Invisible People, September 29, 2009 02:11 PM

No time for losers......weHomeless World Cup: Anthem
It was book named “Invisible People (77 glances into the lives of Russian citizens who are not registered at their place of residence, and to whom the Russian Constitution consequently does not apply)” and published by Non-Commercial Partnership “New Social Solutions” which publishing became the central event of 2009 year homeless football season in Russia.
Money earned by selling of this book let organize the 4th Homeless Russia Open football tournament (with 12 teams participated) and cover travel expenses of Russian national homeless team taking part in Homeless World Cup in Milano, Italy. It was the only income of Russian homeless football this year…
Russians were 15th team at Homeless World Cup — but they’ve got Fair Play Cup from UEFA.
“Invisible People” are translated into English now — and wait for readers all over the world!

Homeless football: Russia

By Arkady TYURIN - Homeless Russia Open’s gonna rise again, May 23, 2009 07:55 AM

The fourth Homeless Russia Open football championship will take place on June 19-21 in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. 11 Russian teams and homeless teams from Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine will take part in this competition. 8 best Russian players will be chosen to form national homeless team to present Russia at Homeless World Cup in Milan, Italy this autumn.

Usually this tournament has great media coverage. This year wasn’t an exception. Last week two homeless from Saint-Petersburg were interviewed by Swedish street-magazine Faktum:

Igor

— What is it for you — football?
— A sport.
— What is it for you — homelessness?
— A life which is passing by in vain.
— What makes you happy?
— Belief in God.
— What is your strongest wish?
— To have somewhere to live.

Alexey

— What does homelessness mean to you?
— It is the chance to learn what is truly valuable.
— Describe the Homeless Football Championships in five words…
— Starting to believe in yourself. Ecstasy. Interacting with people.
— What is your strongest wish?
— To fall in love.
— What would you like to learn?
— How to understand and accept people for whom they are.

Homeless football in Russia

Football is possibly the best analogy for human life. Football, like life, is a team effort; there are always uphill struggles and the need to overcome them. In football you will find pain and happiness; equality before the rules of the game and respect towards ones opponent; recollections from ones childhood and triumphs as an adult.
There will always be a place for football. It has proved itself to be an extremely effective means of integrating excluded groups back into society. Among these groups number the homeless, refugees, economic migrants and those recovering from drug or alcohol related dependencies. Taking part in a sporting activity is not just a means of keeping oneself in good condition and leading a healthier lifestyle. It is an opportunity to acquire the practices of working systematically and working as part of a team. In the process one establishes new social contacts and a more positive outlook on life, resulting in the return of a feeling of self-esteem for the participant.

Six years ago homeless people of Russia started playing football. And this is what we have gained from it.
