More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Children seek recognition and a chance to create. In Lyantonde, Uganda, devastated by AIDS, the reality of poverty and social stigma threatens community cohesion and cultural heritage. The needs of AIDS orphans demand a response that extends beyond material support and touches upon the human need to share experiences with others. We want to provide youth with a means of self-expression and a platform to educate public audiences and actively combat social apathy.

Activities

Work produced from multi-media art projects in Uganda will be exhibited in the United States to collect resources to support programs for youth identified by the community.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

In the US, audiences are overwhelmed with negative images. Sharing intimate stories from Uganda personalizes a crisis and builds support for action. Leveraging assets, we hope to strengthen the capacity of Ugandan communities to address local needs.

Project Message

This project is a stunning combination of idealism, selflessness, creativity, internationalism, energy and results. It is entirely the work of our youth.
- Sylvia Manning, Former Chancellor UIC
