More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Mali government cannot afford to fund the educational needs in the rural villages of Ouelessebougou. Most teachers were initially trained in the manner of the French colonial schools—rote memorization, corporal punishment, etc. Village teachers need essential ongoing training to provide quality education for village children. School attendance continues to increase each year. More than 500 girls are now attending school--an opportunity their mothers never had!

Activities

Teachers receive ongoing training from staff and government education programs, all funded by the Alliance. Teachers are paid approximately $65/month. The Alliance pays a portion; the villagers pay the rest (about 75 cents per child).

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Education has only been available to children in these 12 rural villages since the Alliance’s involvement in 1986. 1,528 students are now going to school, an opportunity most of their parents never had. Students continue to progress each year.

Project Message

“Before the school came, our village was in darkness; after the school came, we came into light.”
- Sena, Village chief

Latest Update from the Field

school started yesterday!

By Jodie Jensen - Program Director, October 08, 2009 12:15 PM

The 09-10 school year just started in Mali. Ramadan is over, as well as the rainy season, so families and teachers are ready to get students back in the classrooms. Thanks to the generous donations that we have received for education, the Alliance is sponsoring a 5 day training next week that will focus on helping teachers successfully make the transition between Bambara and French in their classrooms.

Education - especially for girls - has seen innovations in Mali over the last few years. We are happy to inform you that 56% of girls in OUA villages are enrolled in school. Nationally, only 34% of girls are enrolled. There is still a long way to go, but this is tremendous progress!

Village leaders are starting to see great impact on the overall development of their communities. The chief of Djemene, Niakale Samake, said, "we have a school thanks to the OUA and education is at the base of all development."

We join with the villagers in thanking you for your generous support. We are excited for a great school year - one in which many more girls will be attending, teachers will feel more confident in their interactive teaching methods, new schools will be built, and old ones repaired. We look forward to hearing from you and keeping you updated!
