More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
There is a high school drop-out crisis far beyond the imagination of most Americans…relegating many thousands of children to a life drugs, crime and underachievement. We urgently need to address this problem together. Our project provides 1-to-1 mentoring to high school students across the US who have been selected as highly motivated and gifted students but lacking the resources needed to succeed. This program supports students to finish high school, enter college and break the poverty cycle.
Activities
Students complete a 9-month mentoring program, during which they identify their unique talents, interests and goals and careers that best match. Students also develop essential character skills such as motivation, confidence and persistence.

America's Giving Challenge Success Stories

Three teens, all from different states, completed the program and each reported different benefits...I am happy to let them speak with their own voice. These quotes were taken from the interviews we had with them after they completed their programs:
"I was really excited to start the Potential Discovery Course because I just finished my first year of Community College but I really did not know what I wanted to study. I am the first person in my family to graduate from high school and continue onto college, but I felt like I was letting my family down. After the Potential Discovery Course, I understand what I want to do much better. I am excited about studying to become a teacher and hope to transfer to a 4-year college at the end of next year. I also understand myself much more and what is important in my life. I understand that I am different than a lot of my friends and that's OK. It was a lot of fun - thank you Hidden Potential!" - Ron, 20, Bradenton, Florida
"My mom signed me up for the Potential Discovery Course because she heard about it in church. I wasn't sure why I was going, but after the first two weeks I started to have a lot of fun with my Potential Coach. I will be a Junior in high school next year and I think that I will apply for college. I didn't think about college before, but now I am pretty sure that I want to go. I think I want to become a computer designer. I am already good with computers and it will be a fun job to have."
- Deonte, 16, Cleveland, Ohio
"I was getting into a lot of trouble at school before I started the Hidden Potential Course. I know my parents were worried, but I didn't really care. Now I know that what I do today will change my future. I want to go to college and get a good job, so I am going to keep out of trouble because if I get in more trouble it will hurt my future."
- Nick, 16, Denver, Colorado
