More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

We allow underprivileged children to experience their local environment. We inspire these children to protect their environment and inform them about eco tourism job opportunities. We develop the children’s self-confidence while diminishing the stigma of apartheid through working with international volunteers. We give a safe home to orphaned and injured wildlife. We urgently need a vehicle to safely and legally transport the children.

Activities

Weekly 8 kids are collected from their village and taken to the bush school where they stay for 5 days. Rescued animals, bush walks and lessons inspire students to care for their environment. Children are also taught about life skills and careers.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Today’s local underprivileged children will be able to secure good employment in nature reserves. The children, future custodians of nature, will be inspired to protect wildlife and their fragile environment. Transporting them safely is essential.

Project Message

I believe the future of our environment lies in the education of our children. If people care about nature, they will look after it. Transporting the children to and from their village safely is vital

Latest Update from the Field

Safety has a price

By Ian and Michele Merrifield - A great vehicle to transport the children, July 24, 2009 02:04 PM

Dear All,

You’ve all heard about our urgent need of a vehicle to safely transport the underprivileged children from their home to Daktari.
As we couldn’t carry on the project without a safe and legal vehicle to pick up and drop off the children we had to make numerous plans to purchase a vehicle on a loan. This wasn't easy but we made it!!!

We are now very happy to have a beautiful Toyota Quantum and can carry on the good work. The police have nothing to say anymore when they stop us on the road and we even think they are jealous and surprised by the way Daktari always manage to find solutions even when they are so difficult to get over. Thanks to our great supporters.

Unfortunately the loan to pay every month is affecting our monthly expenses very badly and we need every donation, even as little as 10 $ to refund the price of the car.

Tell us what you think of our car. We are so proud of it!!!!

We thank you for your continued support.

Have a nice summer holiday

Ian and Michele
