More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
With drinking wells covered from the floods, the water supply has become extremely polluted. WMI staff anticipates a great need for safe water in response to this disaster, as initial assessments begin today. In Padang, a city of 900,000, more than 500 people have been killed. This number continues to rise as the rubble from buildings, bridges, and houses is slowly lifted. However, as the rain continues and floods begin to rise, the total need will grow.
Activities
With a native staff of five (5) already on the ground in Indonesia, assessments will begin to determine the total need. Currently, WMI has 32 systems in country that will be used to aid in the relief of the people of Padang and surrounding areas.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Each system is capable of treating 10,000 gallons of water each day, enough for 5,000 people in a disaster situation. With Indonesia staff and a country program, we have the support for this response to become sustainable community development.
Project Message
"We count it a blessing to respond very quickly and cost-effectively to this disaster. However, funds are needed before WMI can initiate a full response to these hurting people."
- Jerry Miner, Director of Disaster Relief

Disaster Response- UPDATE
By Lindsey Ballenger - Director of Development, October 06, 2009 11:39 AM
Twenty safe water storage tanks were transported to Padang yesterday. The tanks will allow WMI to set up multiple distribution points and serve more people.
An additional water treatment system is being transported to Pariaman, another city that suffered extensive damage from the quake. The system is expected to arrive early this week, once roads are cleared enough to get through by pick-up truck. This system will provide safe drinking water for up to 5,000 people.
Four more water treatment systems are being flown in from Jakarta and are expected to arrive today, Tuesday, October 6. Once WMI technicians on the ground can complete more assessments, the location of these water systems will be determined.
