Who is running this fund?

Joyce Manchester directs the Long-Term Modeling Group at the Congressional Budget Office in Washington, DC, and is the former secretary of the governing board for Our Voices Together. She and her husband, David Stapleton, support education for boys and especially girls in Afghanistan through The Afghan Education Giving Circle of Northern Virginia. Friends Leslie Whittington and Charles Falkenberg, along with their daughters Zoe and Dana, were passengers on American Flight 77.

David Stapleton is the director of the Center for Studying Disability Policy at Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., in Washington, DC, and a former board member of Our Voices Together. He and his wife, Joyce Manchester, founded and lead The Afghan Education Giving Circle of Northern Virginia which funds school projects in Afghanistan. Friends Leslie Whittington and Charles Falkenberg, along with their daughters, Zoe and Dana, were passengers on American Flight 77.

Gene Steuerle is Vice President with the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. He previously served as a Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute, and as co-director of the Tax Policy Center, a joint effort of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution. On September 11, 2001, Gene's wife Norma was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 77, which was flown into the Pentagon. In the days following the 9/11 attacks, individuals around the world responded with an outpouring of goodwill toward the families who had lost loved ones and with widespread solidarity against terrorist tactics. This spirit of community and the feeling that these families had a voice that could be used for compassion motivated Gene and his daughters to donate the money they received from the federal Victim Compensation Fund to start two charities, the Alexandria Community Trust and Our Voices Together (now merged with Americans for Informed Democracy). Gene has reached out to numerous families and friends who also lost loved ones to terrorism and is expanding his vision to include the Safer, More Compassionate World Fund Ð philanthropy intended to thwart the terrorists' intent by building positive change in vulnerable countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan.
