Summary

Many rural areas in Liberia lack healthcare, health ed., or literacy services. Without this Liberians don't know how to use preventative methods that decrease infant and maternal mortality and improve the quality of life. Each year IHI's Clinic serves over 15,000 people, and our literacy programs work with 200 women and our new "Liberian Women's Health Manual" will be used by local women to teach women and girls improved health, sanitation, nutrition and human rights practices. Challenge

Many years post-conflict, most Liberians still live in poverty and lack access to quality, affordable healthcare, education or Literacy. Patients often walk long distances for care and risk being turned away due to a lack of medical supplies. Malnutrition, Malaria, Diabetes, and other are rampant, and Liberia's maternal and infant mortality are among the highest in the world - nearly 15% of children die by their first birthday. Government Health Centers often run without staff or medicine.

Solution

IHI purchased two ambulances to support local hospitals and bring health care to remote areas. We are creating a Women and Family Education Manual for our outreach and installing latrines & wells in 5 areas. Because of the low levels of literacy & health care in the areas outside of Monrovia, we have turned one of the ambulances into a mobile health unit. Bringing Health Care, Health Ed. to remote areas will enrich women's ability to improve preventative practices & increase life expectancy

IHI not only provides care, resources, and education to promote the health and wellbeing of its community, it also serves as a model for locally driven grassroots development.
