Summary

On Saturday, April 25, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, followed by powerful aftershocks in the coming days. Destruction is widespread throughout the country and it is going to take a long time to recover. The American Himalayan Foundation has created an Earthquake Disaster Recovery Fund to help with long-term rebuilding and recovery as the people of Nepal struggle to put their lives back together in the months - and likely years - to come.

Challenge

The capital city of Kathmandu has been badly shaken, but some of the greatest devastation is in the remote villages in the hills outside of the capital city. Countries with limited resources like Nepal are particularly vulnerable when catastrophe strikes, and the reports from these and other difficult-to-reach parts of the country are especially bleak with little aid reaching them from the overstretched central government.

Solution

Our staff and partners have begun the massive task of assessing the damage and helping people put their lives and communities back together. We have partners spread throughout Nepal and are working closely with them to determine how best we can help each of the many diverse communities affected. Over the coming months and years, we are committed to helping those hit the hardest recover from this tragedy and begin to rebuild what they have lost.

Long-Term Impact

AHF has been working in Nepal for 34 years, building deep relationships and responding to the priorities and concerns of the communities we work with. The strong partnerships we have developed over the years give us a foundation to build effective recovery projects upon, even in the most rural areas. And our long history and connection with the Himalaya further intensifies our commitment to helping the people of Nepal recover from this devastating tragedy.
